A Sleeping Bear and FAITH

So this is a picture of me and my daughter Ana. Hubby took it of us while we were impatiently in line while waiting for the lift. Poor thing has mono. She has been sleeping like a hibernated bear. And it is midterm week. You know you cram review everything since August and get tested on it to make sure that you have learned something. It is tough to do when you are in the acute stages of mono. And yes, I am glad that I encouraged the doctor to do the mono test. Otherwise, I would think she is being lazy, which clearly isn't the case.
So what do you think about our kids and testing? I remember we took standardized tests every few years. I rarely remember big tests in elementary, like my little one has frequently. And how about a test to graduate from high school in 10th grade...we didn't have that either. It seems like there are way too many tests for kids, which may not be a good thing. What do you think?

And I have finally figured out my word for 2012. FAITH.
definition:
  1. Complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
  2. Strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

I will elaborate further on my word and what I hope to achieve this year. I'm trucking upstairs to see if my Anabear, the sleeping bear, has stirred.

hugs,
Cathy

  1. You guys look adorable and I am so glad that you got to ski! SO sorry though that she has mono, that is tough. I hope she feels better soon. As for testing, I agree. They are already asking my daughter to take pre-ACT and she is only in 8th grade. They say they want to give them experience and she can qualify for things, etc. But the test is so hard there is no way! She takes the standardized tests every year too which are odd, I don't remember doing all that that often.
    Love your word girl!

  2. My oldest took the ACT I believe at the beginning of 6th grade to see if she qualified for any other accelerated programs. We are proud to say her scores were higher than what an athlete needed to go into most college programs. Outside of bragging rights, I think they were a waste of our time.

  4. Poor girl, especially during exam time. Our kids have tests in grade 3,6, and 9 and then again in 12. I've always downplayed them, but they are still stressful. They are looking to phase them out which I think is great.

  5. I agree...too many tests. My third grader actually worries about passing the EOG. How ridiculous.
    Love your word! Love it!

  6. Oh Cathy! feeling so much better thanks! Looking once again at your ski pictures makes me terribly jealous. We bought season passes and then found out about the baby and I'm out for the season :( Then again, the mountains here haven't gotten much snow and we've had lots of friends get injured on over crowded poorly conditioned slopes. Wondered if our storm would pass your way though :)

  7. HOpe your little bear is feeling better. I agree. Too many tests. Last year we went away skiing during the writing SOL. BB's teacher made a HUGE deal out of her missing it. I let her have it (in a passive aggressive way) via email. I had just lost my mom and we were going to go to Colorado to celebrate my parents come hell or high water. And the school could take their useless test and...

Aren't you glad you asked??! ;)
